Drive past Windermere village, and along the side of Windermere Lake until you reach Waterhead, which is at the Northern end of Windermere Lake. You will come to a set of traffic lights at Waterhead Pier. Turn left and follow the road for half a mile until you reach Ambleside Rugby Club on the left hand side. Turn left, onto the A593, which is sign posted for Coniston, Langdale and Hawkshead, then turn left 400 yards later over Rothay Bridge. Follow the A593 for a quarter of a mile, then turn left towards Hawkshead. The village is 5 miles along this road. On approaching the village, there is a sharp left turn. Turn right into the village at this point, and the Red Lion Inn is 100 yards on your left. There is a small car park at the side of the Inn.

Take M6 until junction 36, then follow A590/A591 for Kendal and Windermere. Bypass Kendal, then turn left at the end of Kendal by pass onto the B5284, sign posted Crook, Bowness and Hawkshead via Ferry. Follow the road until you reach the outskirts of Bowness, then follow signs for the Ferry. The ferry runs every 20 minutes between 8.00 am and 9.00 pm, but can be taken out of service due to bad weather or when the lake is high. Road signs at the end of Kendal Bypass will indicate whether the ferry is operating or not. The fee is 4.50 per car, including passengers and the passage across the Lake takes about 10 minutes. Once on the other side, follow the B5285 to Hawkshead. This route takes you past Hill Top, Beatrix Potters home, and Esthwaite Water. On approaching Hawkshead, turn right and bypass the village, then turn left. The Red Lion Inn is 100 yards on your left. There is a small car park at the side of the Inn.
